LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Clark County District Attorney’s Office has issued a response to community outrage over a video showing the abuse of a kitten.
The man in the video, identified as Angel Ayala, is facing charges of animal abuse following his arrest. DA Steve Wolfson said that after the video was posted on social media, his office “received numerous emails, calls and messages.”
“My office takes animal abuse cases seriously. We almost always get convictions and the appropriate punishment, depending on the facts and circumstances of this case,” said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson. “I have received many, many emails concerning the case of the State vs Angel Ayala. I have personally spoken with the assigned prosecutors, and I’m confident that we will achieve the appropriate amount of justice in this case.”
Wolfson said he is personally involved in almost every animal abuse case and is sensitive to the community’s desire for justice.
“I am an animal lover as well. I have three dogs whom I care for deeply,” Wolfson said.
Animal abuse cases can now carry enhanced penalties under Reba’s Law, which went into effect at the start of this year. The law is specific about using an animal to threaten, intimidate or terrorize another person and enhances punishment to a category B felony, which carries a prison sentence of one to six years and a possible fine of up to $10,000.
The District Attorney’s Office said Ayala’s case is pending and working its way through the judicial process. A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday, February 11 at 9:30 a.m.
