LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A valley woman has started a memorial for Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer Austin Abdelnabi near the scene of the shooting that took his life.
Tera Mitchell, a neighbor who started the memorial, said she heard the commotion from her home down the street from the shooting scene near Mountain Vista Street and Hacienda Avenue Tuesday night. Metro police say 30-year-old Officer Abdelnabi was involved in a gun battle with the suspect and later died at the hospital.
Mitchell placed a single black rose with a black ribbon in the fence near the intersection.

“When this one was right down the street from me, I’m like, I have to go,” Mitchell said. “I have to do something.”
Mitchell said she hopes others will follow her lead and bring their own flowers to contribute to the memorial.
“Just please come out and support it,” Mitchell said. “Pray for your officer. Pray for his family and pray for all the other officers and just take time to appreciate them and let them know that you care and just let this hit your heart, like it hit mine.”
