LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A woman and a toddler were shot and killed inside a car in the Southern Highlands area Monday night, according to police.

The shooting occurred near Star Avenue and Dean Martin Drive, and no suspect has been arrested.

Neighbor Jean Paul Paquet said he woke up to gunshots and saw the car the victims were in, including a window that had been shot out.

He said emergency vehicles and police tape remained at the scene until approximately 7 a.m. Tuesday.

“There was a fire truck across the street, a paramedic, an ambulance, police cars everywhere, and the police tape was all around the property till about 7 o’clock this morning,” Paquet said.

Victims were driving home after leaving a nearby residence

The family of the woman killed told FOX5 by phone that she had been watching a friend’s toddler and was driving home to the northeast part of Las Vegas.

The group had left a house in the Southern Highlands area. A friend’s car driving near them was pulled over by police, and the woman — in a separate car — also stopped nearby on Victoria Medici Street. The family said shots were fired at that point.

FOX5 has obtained surveillance video showing another car speeding through the area in the minutes after the shooting.

Paquet said officers moved quickly to search for a suspect, including jumping a fence onto his property.

“The police hopped the fence, they asked for verification that we lived here…then they wanted to go to the backyard. He offered to open the gate, they said they didn’t have time, and they hopped the gate,” Paquet said.

According to Paquet, one of the LVMPD officers cut their hand while jumping the fence during the search.

FOX5 reached out to police regarding the officer’s injury but had not received a response as of Tuesday afternoon.

The name of the woman killed is being withheld at the family’s request.
