LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Clark County’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) is issuing a dust advisory for Thursday, as strong winds are expected to kick up dust around the valley.

Forecasters are predicting northwest winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 45 mph. Officials are urging residents, businesses, and local construction sites to take precautions to reduce dust beforehand.

Residents in east Las Vegas are also being notified about the upcoming implosion of the Eastside Cannery —scheduled for 2 a.m. on Thursday — and the resulting dust that may affect air quality throughout the day.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), these sensitive groups may feel better staying indoors as much as possible, particularly when dust levels are high and physical activity is involved.

Health officials recommend that individuals with medical conditions that make them sensitive to air pollution consult their physicians for specific guidance.

County officials offered the following tips to limit exposure to dust and reduce emissions:

  • Limit outdoor exertion on windy days when dust is in the air.
  • Keep windows and doors closed.
  • Run your air conditioner in your home and car to help filter out particulates.
  • Check and replace indoor air filters if they are dirty.
  • Drive slowly on unpaved roads to minimize dust.
  • Avoid taking shortcuts across vacant lots.
  • Ride off-road vehicles only in approved areas outside the urban Las Vegas Valley.

Residents who observe excessive blowing dust from construction sites, vacant lots, or other facilities are encouraged to report it to the Department of Environment and Sustainability’s dust complaint hotline at 702-385-DUST (3878).
