LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Law enforcement gathered on Thursday to remind drivers of the critical role they played in pedestrian safety across the community.

Officers staged an enforcement and education effort near Charleston Boulevard at Burnham, where a person dressed as a leprechaun used a crosswalk to highlight the importance of yielding.

Many pedestrians said crossing busy valley streets often felt like taking a chance, but authorities stressed that safety depended on responsible, predictable, and lawful behavior from all road users—along with added caution.

Clark County had recorded 14 pedestrian deaths year-to-date, including three juveniles. The initiative was held less than a mile where a 10-year-old boy was hit and killed while crossing the road last week.

Officials on Thursday said the goal of the operation was to educate the public on laws governing safe road use.

The enforcement location also marked the end of a long construction project, an area officials said could tempt some drivers to speed to make up time.
