LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Nevada State Police shared body camera video of a deadly shooting involving an officer on I-11 last week.

NSP said the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Force Investigation Team released preliminary details of their investigation. The police shooting happened just before 2 p.m. on June 10 on I-11 near downtown.

Nevada State Police identified the officer involved as Trooper Dunbar. Colonel Michael Edgell said the trooper has no prior shootings on his record. He was armed with a 9mm handgun and fired six rounds during the incident. A second officer assisted, identified as Trooper Sanders. The incident started as a dispatch to a crash on I-11 near the north 4th Street on-ramp.

Police identified the suspect in the police shooting as Sean Shirazi, 45. He sustained a gunshot wound to his chest, but it was not considered life-threatening. Toxicology reports tested positive for meth and PCP for both him and his passenger. Shirazi’s passenger, identified as Corinne Barnes, 40, died from a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

During the investigation, police discovered Shirazi had just met Barnes shortly before the shooting. Police say he had offered her a ride, consumed meth and PCP before driving recklessly on I-11.

While responding to a crash unrelated to the shooting, Trooper Sanders saw a black Toyota 4-Runner driving recklessly through traffic and told Dunbar. The driver abruptly changed lanes and hit a semi-trailer. Dunbar turned on his lights behind the car and ordered Shirazi to stop. Edgell said the suspect failed to obey commands.

Despite trooper commands to stop the car, police say Shirazi is seen on body camera footage driving forward. Edgell said this caused Trooper Dunbar to get pinned between the suspect’s car and a fire engine behind him. He fired his handgun at the vehicle.

Police said body camera footage and traffic cameras in the area show Shirazi fleeing and ramming another car in the process.

Just after 2:30 p.m., police said Shirazi arrived at a Dignity Health location and told staff police had shot him. Medical found Barnes in the passenger seat with a gunshot wound and pronounced her dead.

Police said Shirazi was taken into custody and transported for medical treatment.

Edgell said 48 minutes elapsed from when the police shooting occurred to when Shirazi drove to Dignity Health. During the investigation, Metro Police discovered Shirazi had stopped at a residence to make a phone call to a family member. He said there was a dead person inside his car.

Shirazi told police he was fearful of going back to prison. He believed law enforcement was looking for him because of his outstanding warrants when he saw police activity and heavy traffic on I-11.

Edgell said Shirazi also provided inconsistent statements about the interaction with Trooper Dunbar. First, he denied he hit the trooper, but later said he did not mean to. He also revealed that he had just met Barnes before giving her a ride.

Nevada State Police revealed Shirazi has an extensive criminal history in both California and Nevada, ranging from DUI, burglary, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a gun by a prohibited person. He now faces second-degree murder, battery, resisting an officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and other traffic-related and misdemeanor city warrants.

“Since July 29th, 2021, we’ve had three of our brothers who were out of this office killed by a vehicle,” Colonel Edgell said. “That is why we take this so serious.”

He appeared in court Tuesday morning and is due back Saturday.

Edgell said the incident was the “best case scenario” with the unfortunate loss of life.

“She’s in our thoughts,” he said. “There was a series of unfortunate events. We are very sorry.”
