LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Mike Tyson concluded his inaugural amateur boxing invitational this past weekend at the Sahara in Las Vegas.

The three-day event, held March 12–14, provided 52 amateur athletes with a platform at no cost to participants. The tournament generated more than 50 million social media impressions.

Stephen Espinoza and Bob Yalen served as executive producers. Jason Benavidez and Armig Smorey were producers.

Tyson and sponsorship money covered operational costs. Alex Meruelo, owner of Sahara, donated $100,000 to the event. The funding allowed organizers to waive entry fees and provide lodging and meals at the Sahara Las Vegas for fighters and coaches.

“Boxing is the foundation of discipline and character, but the amateur system in our country needs a spark,” Tyson said. “With the support of Alex Meruelo and the SAHARA, we’re treating these kids like the stars they are. We’re putting ‘asses in seats’ and giving the next generation a reason to strive for greatness.”

Stitch Duran wrapped the hands of all 52 participants. Amir Tyson, Mauro Ranallo and Raul Marquez provided live commentary for the broadcast on DAZN, Swerve.tv and the All Women’s Sports Network. Former world champion Fernando Vargas attended the event.

The tournament featured 26 bouts.

Tyson selected standout performers for specialty awards:

  • Cus D’Amato Award “Will to Win” (Fight of the Night): Austin Garcia vs Nathan Vasquez in the male division and Alexis Tangaro vs Mandy Hernandez in the female division.
  • The Richard Steel “Will of Steel” Award (Most Outstanding Fighter): Jayden Navarrete and Maxine Garcia.
