LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A demonstration at Sunset Park on Saturday morning saw locals raising concerns about the energy crisis in Cuba.

Last Tuesday, Cuba reported its third island-wide blackout in the last four months, leaving millions in the dark as officials work to restore the country’s aging power grid.

Government officials have blamed the Trump administration for what they describe as an “energy blockade”, which involving placing tariffs on any county that sells of provides oil to Cuba. The Trump administration, in turn, is demanding that Cuba release its political prisoners and move toward political and economic liberalization to lift sanctions.

In Las Vegas, demonstrators amplified demands that Cuba liberate its citizens from communism and urged U.S. intervention.

Raul Sanchez Gonzalez, who is from Cuba, said the situation in his home country has become dire.

“We know the truth. Cuba right now, they don’t have nothing. They don’t have food, they don’t have medicine, they don’t have electricity,” Sanchez Gonzalez said. “So we need this administration… we need to talk to them… take action right now because in Cuba too many people dead every day.”

Sanchez Gonzalez expressed concerns about political prisoners detained in Cuba and the dangers of the dictatorship. “We are from Cuba. We born there. We know exactly what is the danger of the communist mind.”

Sanchez Gonzalez also disputed the Cuban government blaming America for the country’s struggles. “Around the world we know the truth. Nobody sells nothing to Cuba because they don’t pay.”

Sanchez Gonzalez expressed optimism about the Trump administration’s approach to communist countries, citing recent actions regarding Venezuela and Iran. He called for similar intervention in Cuba.

“After Venezuela, it’s for us. The freedom is for us, please,” he said.

Cuban officials report that power is slowly returning to Cuba after a massive power outage left the country in the dark.
