LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Pop-ups are more than an annoyance. These messages are often loaded with malware.
Hackers have found ways to inject malicious software into pop-ups and online ads. Even those encountered on reputable sites are not immune.
One common attack appears as a warning. The pop-up alerts users to a virus and urges them to download anti-virus software. A bogus virus scan begins. When it’s done, users are asked to pay for a full version or to call a helpline to connect with a technical support agent.
The software is not real, and the tech agent will try to take the scam further.
How to protect yourself
Outsmarting the hackers is simple. Don’t click on pop-ups. Update your operating system regularly to keep security protocols current. Use web-filtering software to warn you before you visit potentially shady sites.
A scam is only successful if you fall for it.
