LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Fertitta Middle School in the southwest valley was recognized as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School by Special Olympics Nevada and ESPN.

Students and staff celebrated with a banner unveiling and a visit from WWE stars Chad Gable and Ivy Nile ahead of WrestleMania this weekend.

Principal Greg Siqueiros said this kind of inclusion should be a focus at every school.

“We want them to include special education students on any level. So if you can incorporate them in sports, if you can incorporate them in after-school activities, we want them to just try,” Siqueiros said “And when they try, they’re going to see that it makes a huge difference in that child’s life.”

Nile said she loves working with Special Olympics and WWE for events like this.

“We’re just so blessed to be a part of this community,” Nile said. “And, you know, the moment I stepped into this school, it was the energy. It was just incredible.”

Fertitta Middle School is one of 45 schools on ESPN’s honor roll this year. Schools that receive this recognition from Special Olympics have met 10 national standards of excellence, including integrating unified sports teams.
