RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The IRS says some Nevadans can now file their taxes electronically with a new service called IRS Direct File.
The IRS says the service can be used on a phone, laptop, tablet, or desktop computer.
Nevada is one of 12 states that the IRS has made eligible for the service. It will be limited to taxpayers with certain kinds of income, credits, and deductions, or taxpayers with what the IRS considers “relatively simple” returns.
The new service will be available until April 15.
“Direct File is another option for taxpayers to use to file their federal tax return, and most importantly, it’s free,” said IRS spokesperson Raphael Tulino. “Those interested can check eligibility easily on IRS.gov.”
Eligibility will be determined by:
Income reporting
- W-2 wage income.
- Social Security and railroad retirement income
- Unemployment compensation
- Interest of $1,500 or less
Credits
- Earned Income Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
- Credit for Other Dependents
Deductions
- Standard deduction
- Student loan interest
- Educator expenses
