LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Preparations for Super Bowl LXIII are well underway across Las Vegas, years ahead of the Big Game in 2029.

The Las Vegas Valley celebrated the success of Super Bowl LVIII in 2024, with the city and many football fans asking about a forthcoming return.

How exactly did the Entertainment and Sports Capital of the World get another Super Bowl?

Steve Hill of The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority explains how conversations began shortly after Super Bowl LVIII in New York.

“We stopped by and had a conversation with the folks and reviewed a little bit about what happened, what they liked and what they want to focus on moving forward, and said, ‘We’d like this every year if you’re interested, but we’d love it back as soon as you can think about bringing it back,’” Hill said about his conversations with NFL leadership.

“Then they called maybe a year later and said, ‘you ready to do this in ’29?’ And we said, ‘of course.’ So we set out doing all the work that it takes to make sure that that can happen,” Hill said.

That in-depth work took months of planning, leading up to a 200-page plan in response to the NFL’s “RFP”- or request for proposal. The plan was finished a week before the NFL owners’ meeting in late March in Phoenix, Hill said.

The proposal from the NFL covers an extensive range of future plans, from security, transportation, marketing, decorative plans for the city and the airport, room blocks for NFL teams plus staff and sponsors.

For three weekends, 50 parcels around Allegiant Stadium must be available for tailgates and activations, Hill said.

“The city comes together to pull it off, but it’s a lot of work,” Hill said, noting the extensive collaborative efforts from partners across the city to make events happen– and quickly smooth any issues along the way. “We do it for events on a very regular basis. That type of experience and practice and working together separate Las Vegas from other locations, and it’s a big part of what makes us unique,” Hill tells FOX5.

The LVCVA Board will have an item for the Super Bowl on its agenda before the end of the year; the Super Bowl Host Committee will also be formed soon, Hill said.

What will make the Super Bowl in Las Vegas even better?

“Some of the issues that we did see in the ’24 Super Bowl related to traffic. There’s a bunch of events that are sanctioned events, and then there are a whole bunch of other events that take place. Sometimes those things overlapped and caused traffic jams on Thursday night and Friday night in particular in parts of the city. Being able to separate some of those events now that we know what’s going on will make the experience better for the attendees.

What did the NFL like about the Super Bowl in Las Vegas? Quick troubleshooting of any issues and concerns from resort leaders, Hill said.

“When something wasn’t going right, the city reacts like that. It just knows how to stop a problem or to improve something that needs improved immediately. The entire leadership of the city is focused on that… It gets done. And that’s not always the case in other locations,” he said.

Will Las Vegas get to host even more Super Bowls?

“I think we’re on that road. As long as we continue to do the great job that this city can do, we’re very confident that we are going to get a Super Bowl often. There’s no reason for them not to come; it set financial records for them. We’re looking to do that again in 2029,” Hill said.
