LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The man arrested after a trooper-involved shooting on I-11 left one woman dead and a state trooper injured is facing new murder charges, according to court records.

Sean Shirazi, 45, was taken into custody Wednesday on charges of involuntary manslaughter, disobeying a peace officer, resisting a public officer with a deadly weapon, duty to stop at the scene of an accident, assault, and battery, according to court records. As of Monday morning, his involuntary manslaughter charge has been upgraded to second-degree murder.

Incident details

According to an arrest report obtained by FOX5, the incident began around 1:40 p.m. when troopers were investigating a vehicle accident on I-11 just north of 4th Street, near downtown. When troopers arrived to assist, they reported observing a black Toyota 4Runner attempting to maneuver through traffic and cut into a blocked-off lane.

A trooper activated his lights and honked his air horn at the driver, but saw the vehicle accelerate and continue into the closed lane. Investigators say the 4Runner clipped the left rear of a semi-truck and passed several vehicles before returning to the travel lane. The trooper followed the vehicle and warned his partner of a reckless driver approaching the accident scene.

A trooper stopped the 4Runner and removed his firearm, approaching the vehicle and issuing verbal commands for the driver to lower his window. The driver lowered and raised the window multiple times.

When a trooper opened the driver’s side door, the driver accelerated forward and struck a trooper in his chest area with the front bumper of the 4Runner. The trooper was pinned between the front chrome bumper of a firetruck and the 4Runner.

While pinned between both vehicles, the trooper fired six gunshots toward the driver’s side door of the 4Runner. The vehicle continued driving forward and struck another car, pushing it approximately 50 to 60 feet. The 4Runner then fled the scene northbound on Interstate 11.

At approximately 2:38 p.m., a hospital employee called police to report that a black Toyota 4Runner had arrived at Dignity Health Hospital. Two occupants were in the vehicle, and one said they had been shot at by officers.

Officers responded to the hospital and placed Shirazi into custody. He was transported to UMC Trauma for treatment of a gunshot wound to his upper left chest.

A female passenger sustained a gunshot wound to her left flank rib cage area and was pronounced dead at 3:04 p.m.

Suspect admits to drug use

During an interview at UMC Trauma, Shirazi said he had picked up an unknown woman on the street and offered to smoke methamphetamine with her. He said he picked her up next to the onramp to the freeway.

Shirazi said when he saw police on the freeway, he believed there was an all-points bulletin for him and his vehicle because he had active warrants. He said he began to panic because he did not want to go back to prison.

Shirazi admitted to snorting methamphetamine with the woman right before getting on the freeway while stuck in traffic.

When asked about hitting the trooper with his vehicle, Shirazi initially denied it but later said he did not intend to hit him. He said he just wanted to go home and be safe and not go to jail.

Shirazi later said he wanted to tell the trooper he was sorry before requesting a lawyer.

Additional charges filed

A records check showed Shirazi’s Nevada driver’s license was suspended.

Prior to the trooper-involved shooting, Shirazi was involved in another hit-and-run crash just south of the accident scene. While traveling northbound, he turned his vehicle perpendicular to the travel lanes and went around a tractor-trailer by going into another lane. His vehicle struck the left rear impact guard of the trailer before fleeing the scene.

Shirazi faces additional charges including assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury, duty to stop at an accident with attended vehicle or property damage, driving with a suspended license, failure to render aid at a vehicle accident, and failure to give information to parties at a vehicle accident.

The trooper who was struck sustained injuries to his chest area. A fire captain on scene said the trooper had to move or he was going to get hit, and that if the trooper had not moved or discharged his firearm, the trooper or other firefighters on scene would have been hit by the car.

Shirazi was booked in absentia at UMC Trauma and admitted to the hospital. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Force Investigation Team is conducting the follow-up investigation.
