LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — City of Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley has identified the city employee killed in a deadly downtown shooting last week as Joey McLean, a maintenance worker who had been employed with the city since May 2018.
“This unspeakable act of violence has shaken our team,” Berkley said in a statement. “I ask that the community join me in mourning the loss of life of employee Joey McLean. Please keep Joey’s family, friends and loved ones in your thoughts and in your heart.”
The shooting happened Friday, June 12, in the 400 block of North 7th Street near Mesquite Avenue, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Police said officers responded just after 6 a.m. and found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Metro previously said the 911 caller was the suspect, who reported he had shot his co-worker. Police have described the shooting as stemming from an ongoing dispute between two city maintenance workers.
Berkley said she thanked Metro for a swift response that led to a suspect being taken into custody and said city leadership is working with investigators.
Police have booked 31-year-old Brysen Kim into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon, Berkley’s statement said. Kim has been employed with the city as a maintenance worker since January 2025.
The city said employee assistance resources are being made available and will remain available in the weeks and months ahead.
