LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Two wildfires burning in Lincoln County, Nevada, south of Caliente have scorched more than 41,000 acres combined as of Friday, June 26, with critical fire weather conditions expected to continue through Saturday evening.

The Grapevine Fire is estimated at 24,047 acres and remains 0% contained. The Kane Springs Fire is estimated at 17,042 acres and is 50% contained.

Beaver Dam State Park remains closed until further notice due to fire activity associated with the Grapevine Fire.

Grapevine Fire

Active fire behavior is expected to persist along the eastern portion of the Grapevine Fire due to high winds and low relative humidity, with those conditions forecast to continue through Saturday evening.

Crews are reinforcing and expanding containment lines established through strategic firing operations and heavy equipment along existing road systems to strengthen control features along the western and northern portions of the fire. Mop-up operations are progressing in areas where conditions allow.

Aviation resources continue supporting firefighters working direct suppression tactics on the eastern portion of the fire where terrain allows. Aviation support may be limited Friday and Saturday due to increased winds and low visibility associated with a Red Flag Warning issued for the fire and surrounding areas.

A Structure Protection Group has been established near Barclay, where firefighters are preparing around structures, staging water-handling equipment, improving access routes and preparing the area should fire activity move farther north.

Kane Springs Fire

Firefighters made significant progress during the last operational period on the Kane Springs Fire by completing containment line connections across all three divisions, increasing containment to 50%.

Infrared mapping detected no new fire growth overnight. Crews continue working in heavier interior fuels to extinguish remaining hotspots and reduce residual heat.

As suppression objectives are met, resources are beginning to transition off the incident while firefighters remain prepared for Red Flag Warning conditions and potential initial attack response across the district.

Critical fire weather expected

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the fire area through Saturday evening. Conditions include sustained winds of 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph in the afternoon, low relative humidity and high temperatures.

Increased winds may produce low visibility due to ash and dust in the air. Fire behavior is expected to increase during the critical burn period in the afternoon, with fire growth possible where fuels are available.

Smoke may be visible from surrounding communities and travel corridors. Individuals sensitive to smoke should limit outdoor activity when conditions worsen and monitor air quality at www.airnow.gov.

Residents and visitors are reminded to avoid active fire areas and remain alert for firefighting personnel and equipment operating on area roads.

The public is encouraged to stay informed, review emergency plans and follow all posted closures and restrictions.
