LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Springs Preserve is inviting residents, community groups and artists to build altars honoring deceased loved ones as part of its annual Día de Muertos festival — and the best displays will compete for a share of $5,000 in prize money.
The entry deadline for the altar contest is Sept. 4. This year’s festival is scheduled for Nov. 6–8 at the preserve, located at 333 S. Valley View Blvd., near Meadows Lane between Alta Drive and U.S. 95.

Entry is free, but space is limited. Organizers ask anyone interested in building a contest altar to complete the online altar entry form at springspreserve.org as soon as possible. Participants may also set up an altar outside the competition.
Contest altars will be judged in four categories: traditional, artistic, nonprofit and people’s choice. A total of $5,000 in prize money is available across those categories.
Organizers said altars are a centerpiece of the event and often feature photos, candles, incense, favorite foods and poems. The festival also includes live music and dance.
