LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas police K-9 credited with helping officers locate and apprehend suspects during an eight-year career has died after suffering complications from a seizure, the department said.

The dog, Leico, was a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois who worked alongside handler Officer Sam Carrillo, according to a department statement. The agency said Leico died on Tuesday, July 7.

During his career, Leico assisted patrol officers, SWAT teams and other specialized units, the statement said. The department credited the K-9 team with 93 finds and nine apprehensions.

Leico also served as an ambassador for the K-9 unit, taking part in demonstrations for officers and local schools and appearing at the Hispanic Citizens Academy, where the department said he helped strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community.

In its statement, the department described Leico as energetic and social and said he was a favorite among employees, including dispatchers who regularly welcomed his visits.

The department thanked community members for messages of support and condolences and said Leico would be missed by Carrillo, the K-9 unit, and others who worked with him.
