LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Henderson Department of Motor Vehicles office will permanently close this fall and be replaced by a new facility under construction in Silverado Ranch, the Nevada DMV said.

The Silverado Ranch location is approximately 10 miles — or about 15 minutes — from the current Henderson office. The DMV announced the upcoming opening on social media Monday, writing: “The wait is almost over — Silverado Ranch DMV coming this fall.”

Why the Henderson office is closing

DMV spokesperson Hailey Foster said funding constraints are driving the consolidation.

“It just really has to do with our cap on our funding,” Foster said. “It’s just a little bit more expensive to keep both offices operational. So we’re just merging everything into one.”

Foster also said the Henderson building is outdated.

“The Henderson office is just kind of a more outdated building,” she said. “So we’re really trying to revamp everything with this new Silverado building location.”

What the new facility will offer

Foster described the Silverado Ranch location as the largest DMV facility in the Las Vegas area.

“It’s the biggest facility that we will have down here in Vegas,” she said. “Larger parking lot.”

Foster said the new building will include more ADA features and is modeled after the DMV’s Reno office.

Drivers react to the closure

Some Henderson residents said they were caught off guard by the news. Jesus Cruz said he learned of the closure from FOX5 while visiting the office after purchasing a new car.

“I just bought a new car right now,” Cruz said. “Heard the news coming out that they’re about to close down. I look and feel sad about it. Literally 15 minutes away from my house. It’s so convenient to come here.”

Dion Garrett said the change disrupts a long-standing routine.

“I mean, I’m kind of like someone who likes to stick to routine. So this has been working for me for a lot of years,” Garrett said. “It’s a bummer that they’re closing it. I don’t know why they would close that.”

Lori, a driver at the Henderson location, said the move would burden residents in the area.

“I feel that that’s a bad decision because all these people from old Henderson will have to drive all the way over to Silverado Ranch,” she said.

Rafael Arroyo said the closure would affect a broader area.

“It’s a real detriment to this area of town,” Arroyo said. “If you live in Henderson or even Boulder City, now you’re going to have to drive all the way to Silverado Ranch to get something done.”

Online services, CDL office also affected

The DMV said most services are available online and that customers do not need to visit a physical office for the majority of transactions.

Appointments at the Henderson location will stop being accepted soon, ahead of the fall closure. An exact closing date has not been announced.

The DMV’s CDL office on Donovan Way in northwest Las Vegas Valley will also close, with its operations moving to the Silverado Ranch location as well.
