LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer accused in a commercial fraud scheme is being released without posting cash bail.
Officer Antonio Chavez appeared in court today on a criminal complaint alleging he conspired with his wife in a multi-thousand-dollar fraud operation out of California, defrauding stores and credit card companies for personal gain.

Prosecutors asked for $100,000 cash bail, a source hearing to prove any bail money is legitimate, and house arrest. They argued Chavez is especially concerning because, as an officer who enforces the law, he knows the law and admitted he willingly broke it.
The defense countered that Chavez is 28 years old with no criminal history, no failures to appear, and strong ties to Nevada, and that he fully cooperated with investigators.
They urged the judge to treat him like any other defendant and emphasized he’s presumed innocent.
The judge called the charges personally offensive but noted they are non-violent.
She ruled monetary bail is not necessary, instead ordering mid-level electronic monitoring and restricting him to Clark County while the case is pending.
His preliminary hearing is set for October 8 at 10 a.m.
His co-defendant and wife, Claudia Guzman-Marquez, who is six months pregnant, received the same type of GPS monitoring.
