LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Clean air advocates and local leaders say federal transportation funding decisions could shape Southern Nevada’s health and household costs.

Outside the RTC building Thursday, the Sierra Club, Moms Clean Air Force, Teamsters Nevada and elected officials called for more federal money for electric vehicles, buses and public transit.

Transportation emissions and costs

They said transportation is now the largest source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and a major household expense.

Congresswoman Dina Titus highlighted existing funding, including millions for EV charging, Maryland Parkway bus rapid transit and 32 electric school buses. She warned new federal plans could cut back money for charging stations and transit.

“Transportation makes up about 29% of greenhouse gas emissions, so electrification and modernization of transportation is really the key to making progress on clean air and public health,” Titus said.

A mother of an asthmatic child and Teamsters representatives described how polluted air from cars, trucks and buses affects children and workers first. They urged Congress to protect clean transportation funds.
