Nevada active voter registration drops by more than 50,000 in August

CARSON CITY, Nev. (FOX5) — Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar reported a decrease of 50,130 active registered voters during August 2026 compared to July 2026.

The total number of active registered voters in Nevada is 2,062,136, a decrease of 2.37%, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Reason for the decrease

The decrease in active registered voters is largely due to list maintenance activities and often occurs ahead of the National Voter Registration Act 90-day quiet period before an election, which prohibits routine list maintenance activities until the election is over, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Breakdown by party

Nonpartisan active registered voters decreased by 18,791, or 2.30%. Democratic Party active registered voters statewide decreased by 14,168, or 2.43%. Republican Party active registered voters statewide decreased by 13,003, or 2.24%. Independent American Party active registered voters decreased by 2,657, or 3.11%, and Libertarian Party of Nevada active registered voters decreased by 479, or 3.40%. Active registered voters from a compilation of “other” minor political parties decreased by 1,032, or 3.24%, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Of the 2,062,136 active registered voters in Nevada:

• 796,805 are Nonpartisan (38.64%)
• 569,337 are Democrats (27.61%)
• 568,665 are Republicans (27.58%)
• 82,903 are members of the Independent American Party (4.02%)
• 13,620 are members of the Libertarian Party of Nevada (0.66%)
• 30,806 are members of other minor political parties (1.49%)

Inactive registered voters

The Secretary of State’s Office also provides monthly reports on the number of inactive voters in Nevada. An inactive registered voter is a voter who is registered and legally eligible to vote, but has been flagged through Nevada’s list maintenance processes, conducted by the counties, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Inactive registered voters do not receive mail-in ballots for any election, but they remain on the voter rolls for two federal general election cycles, per the National Voter Registration Act, and are still eligible to vote, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Of the 426,577 inactive registered voters in Nevada:

• 196,289 are Nonpartisan (46.01%)
• 105,481 are Democrats (24.73%)
• 91,185 are Republicans (21.38%)
• 19,770 are members of the Independent American Party (4.63%)
• 4,416 are members of the Libertarian Party of Nevada (1.04%)
• 9,436 are members of other minor political parties (2.21%)

A county marks a voter as inactive when the county sends the voter a notice to confirm their address on record and the county does not receive a response from the voter, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. If a voter does not respond to notice from the county and does not vote for two federal general elections in a row, their registration may be canceled, officials said.
