LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Businesses near the Las Vegas Strip say preparations for this fall’s Las Vegas Grand Prix are creating challenges as construction ramps up in the area.
Crews started work Monday on track lighting for November’s race. The work is expected to run through Friday, Sept. 18. Two lanes will be closed overnight on Harmon Avenue from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., starting Sunday, Sept. 13 and ending Sept. 18.
Mohit Singh, manager of Las Vegas Souvenirs & Gifts near Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, said the first few years of construction hurt the store’s bottom line.

“The beginning few years were the worst. They absolutely killed our sales and killed our business,” Singh said.
Impact on sales
Singh said, for the past few years, construction for the race has made it harder for pedestrians to reach the store, raised rideshare costs, and forced drivers to drop passengers farther away from stores. He said that means fewer customers coming through the doors.
“Our sales have dropped significantly,” Singh said. “We’ve actually been ordering less merchandise because of that. And we’ve been raising store prices, which we did not want to do.”
Call for support
Singh said, while things have gotten better as construction timelines have shortened, he still believes Clark County and F1 should do more to support businesses during the work.
“I think the reimbursement would be nice,” Singh said. “I think if they did limit the construction, or they could find a different passage, or try not to block off the stores.”
