LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Entertainers and hospitality workers on the Las Vegas Strip say official tourism figures may suggest strength, but front-line employees are experiencing canceled shows, restaurant closures and a noticeable decline in international visitors.
Performer Estefan Velasco, who has appeared in multiple large Strip productions, said working performers are among the first to feel the impact of fewer overseas travelers.
“We get emails every day about shows reducing their show times or being cancelled entirely,” Velasco said, adding that fewer international visitors lead to empty showroom seats and fewer jobs for dancers, musicians, technicians and stagehands.

Bartender Spencer Ridenour noted a sharp shift in his clientele, saying Canadian and Mexican visitors have “completely disappeared.” Ridenour also said dozens of restaurants throughout Clark County have closed in recent months, leaving employees juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet.
Bridgie Nix, a dancer and choreographer, said at least eight major shows have shuttered since last year, forcing her to travel to California and Colorado to secure work.
Sandra Haragui, a candidate for Nevada lieutenant governor, said she sides with workers and believes the state must invest more heavily in recruiting international travelers back to Las Vegas while supporting the workforce behind the state’s entertainment economy.
However, downtown operators describe a different trend. Circa CEO Derek Stevens said the company’s Canadian “at par” promotion, which ran through August, brought approximately 120,000 Canadian travelers to the D, Circa and the Golden Gate—an 80% jump compared to the previous year.
The contrasting experiences highlight a growing debate over whether Las Vegas front-line workers are facing a quiet economic squeeze even as select properties and targeted promotions report strong international traffic.
