HENDERSON, Nev. — The City of Henderson gave out free helmets on a first-come, first-served basis Tuesday as part of an effort to educate families about e-bike and e-scooter safety.
The event was held at Henderson Police’s new Inspirada substation. Parents and riders gathered to learn the rules of the road for e-bikes and e-scooters.
Residents cite safety concerns
One resident said safety has been a concern as more children ride e-bikes and e-scooters.
“Safety has been an important safety aspect which has kinda been a concern. For us, as all the kids have been going crazy… just concerns for their safety and us as drivers as well,” the resident said.

Police clarify what’s legal
Henderson police drew a distinction between what is legal to ride on public roads and what isn’t.
“That is a dirt bike that isn’t street legal unless you put signals on there, you get a speedometer, has to have a VIN number, and you would have to have a motorcycle license to be able to ride that,” Henderson Police Chief Reggie Radar said.
Police said illegal models can reach higher speeds, are not built for traffic, and catch drivers off guard. To be street legal, bikes must have functional pedals that riders actually use to create momentum.
Helmets distributed at event
Officers also gave out free helmets during the event.
“I’ve been doing this job for closer to 30 years now. Anytime you have an auto-pedestrian or a person on a bike that hit a vehicle or another object, it’s a really bad day. You tend to skid really, really far, your head bouncing this way and that way. The most precious thing you have is that brain in there, and if you’re not protecting it with something hard, it’s gonna be a very bad day for you,” Radar said.
Henderson police said compliance is improving because of ongoing community outreach. Police said their goal is to keep spreading the message, especially to teens and parents.
