LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Rural veterans in Mesquite will soon have an easier way to see their VA doctors without making the long drive to Las Vegas.

VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) is opening a new ATLAS telehealth site inside the Mesquite Veterans Center, giving veterans in the area a dedicated space to connect virtually with VA clinicians.

ATLAS stands for “Accessing Telehealth through Local Area Stations.” The program is a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs initiative designed to reduce barriers such as long travel times, poor internet connectivity and unreliable transportation.

The new site will offer a private, comfortable room equipped with high-tech video conferencing tools, so veterans can attend VA medical appointments closer to home. The VASNHS partnership with the Mesquite Veterans Center allows veterans to save time and travel expenses, while helping them stay engaged in their care even when services are not available locally.

To mark the opening, the VA is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony and resource fair in Mesquite.
