LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A girl is in critical condition Friday night and a female juvenile is in custody following a Thursday afternoon shooting.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the intersection of Mews Lane and Searles Avenue, near Eastern and Owens, around 3:48 p.m. after receiving emergency calls regarding gunfire.
Neighbors tell FOX5 off camera, there was a group of teenagers not from the neighborhood loitering in the area; later, a neighbor said they heard gunfire and screams as police quickly arrived.
Arriving officers discovered a female suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. On Friday, authorities added that the victim was a juvenile.

Neighbors said officers performed life-saving measures on her, and paramedics immediately transported her to a local hospital in critical condition, police said in an update.
The suspect fled the area prior to the officers’ arrival and remained at large. On Friday, police added that a female juvenile was arrested in connection with this incident.
Teenagers were interviewed at the scene by officers, neighbors tell FOX5.
The incident happened half a mile from Rancho High School. Administrators sent a letter home to parents, but did not indicate to families or FOX5 if any students were involved:
Dear Rancho High School Families,
We are aware of the police investigation that took place on Thursday afternoon regarding a shooting near Eastern Avenue and Searles Avenue.
Since the incident occurred near homes within our school’s zone, we understand that some students may be affected. We want to assure families that we have counseling resources available for any students who may need assistance.
We do not have further details to share at this time, as this is an LVMPD investigation.
Parents voiced concerns about more guns in the hands of youth.
“There are gun safes, there are gun laws, there are gun locks. Do your part as a responsible parent and lock it up,” one concerned parent said, who told FOX5 about the letter she received.
CCSD directed FOX5 to LVMPD for any details on the investigation.
