LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — State, county, and municipal offices across the Las Vegas Valley are closed Friday, Oct. 30, in observance of Nevada Day, giving many public workers a three-day weekend to celebrate the Silver State’s admission to the Union.
Nevada was admitted as the 36th state on Oct. 31, 1864. Under state law, the official state holiday is observed on the last Friday of October, meaning government schedules and service availability differ from standard federal holidays.
What is closed
Because Nevada Day is a state-recognized holiday, closures are concentrated across state and local government agencies:
- State government offices: State administrative offices, including the Nevada Department of Agriculture and local Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles offices, are closed Friday and Saturday. Regular operations resume Monday, Nov. 2. Many routine DMV transactions remain accessible through online services.
- Clark County offices: Clark County government offices are closed Friday and will reopen Monday, Nov. 2.
- City of Henderson: City administrative offices and select municipal facilities are closed Friday.
- Courts and non-essential local agencies: State, county and local court systems and administrative departments are closed for the holiday.
Emergency and essential operations — including law enforcement from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, fire departments, emergency medical services and essential municipal utilities — continue normal around-the-clock operations.
What remains open
Because Nevada Day is not a federal holiday, federal institutions and private sector services generally maintain regular operating schedules:
- U.S. Postal Service: Post offices are open, and standard mail delivery continues as scheduled Friday and Saturday.
- Federal courts and agencies: Federal government buildings and administrative agencies operate under regular Friday hours.
- Financial institutions: Major commercial banks are expected to operate normally.
- Private businesses: Retail stores, grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, and casino resorts across Southern Nevada remain open.
Events and celebrations across Southern Nevada
Several local attractions and venues are offering special events and free admission:
- Springs Preserve: Offering free admission to Nevada residents with a valid ID on Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. General admission fees apply to out-of-state guests. Free parking is available on-site, with overflow parking designated at Meadows Mall. No advance reservations are required, though Springs Preserve organizers recommend arriving early due to expected high turnout.
- Nevada State Museum: Free admission is offered on both Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31, providing visitors an opportunity to explore state history exhibits.
- Vegas Golden Knights: The Golden Knights host a Nevada Day celebration game against the New Jersey Devils, encouraging fans to wear white.
- Nevada Day Parade: The state’s flagship annual Nevada Day Parade takes place along Carson Street in Carson City, continuing a long-standing tradition celebrating Nevada heritage.
