LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The City of Henderson has plans to make the community safer one streetlight at a time.
A newly-awarded $20 million project will change all of the city’s 30,000 streetlights to LED, making the streets and surrounding areas brighter, according to city officials.
“Boulder Highway has already been dark at night. That has been our issue,” the owner of FlowerEve Gift and Home, Evelyn Guin, says.
Guin has owned FlowerEve Gift and Home, right off Boulder Highway, for seven years.
She says as crime has grown in the area, the shop has lost some regular customers who live in the neighboring 55+ communities.
“We have a lot of older communities in this area that don’t want to go out at night,” Guin says. “It’s so dangerous.”
The owner of Reign Barbershop Shop, Adrian Rosales, says he hopes the brighter lights will make the streets safer for pedestrians.
“Since we’ve been here, maybe more than I can count on one hand, pedestrian deaths or people being hit by cars just right out here in front of our place,” Rosales says. “It’s too dark, it’s too dark out there.”
City officials say the change will save the city energy, too. They’ll also be adding smart technology to the lights to help monitor outages and fix them quicker.
