LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A 17-year-old Henderson teen is facing attempted murder charges related to an attempted drug deal that turned violent earlier this month.
On Monday, April 1, Las Vegas police arrived at an apartment complex in the 4400 block of Escondido Street around 4:16 p.m. Two teens were located at the scene, one suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm, and the other suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Both were transported to Sunrise Hospital shortly after police arrived.
Detectives determined that the suspect – identified as 17-year-old Lucas Murphy – was present at the scene to sell “wax pens” to several other teens.
One of the teens would tell investigators that they had contacted Murphy and agreed to pay $70 for three pens. However, according to the report, the teen also admitted that they “did not have the money and planned to steal the pens.”
The report notes that before the shooting, the teen approached Murphy with his phone in his hand “so it looked like he had CashApp open to pay,” before grabbing the pens and running. The teen recalled hearing “two gunshots” while running, and once he was back inside an apartment, realized he had been shot in the arm.
While cleaning his wound inside an apartment, the teen also realized another juvenile was missing from the group. He told detectives that the police arrived shortly after and informed the teen that they had located a person outside who had been shot.
Detectives determined that Murphy was seen driving in the area in a light blue Ford Mustang after obtaining surveillance footage from CCSD. A record check of the vehicle’s license plate led police to Murphy’s Henderson residence, where detectives observed Murphy attempting to hide the vehicle behind a gate. Murphy was apprehended by police after leaving his residence in a different vehicle and was taken into custody.
Murphy is currently facing three counts of attempted murder and one count of discharging a firearm at an occupied structure. According to court records, he was released on bail and electronic monitoring on Thursday, April 4.
He is due in court again for a preliminary hearing on July 24.
