LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Many people around the Las Vegas Valley had their cars stolen after a TikTok challenge exposed how to steal certain model KIA and Hyundai cars.

But now thefts are going down, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department figures.

“Over the course of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, the automakers affected provided software updates and other anti-theft devices to our community. These efforts have helped reduce vehicle thefts across the valley,” said an LVMPD statement to FOX5.

According to LVMPD statistics, car thefts were down nearly 18 percent overall from January to the week ending April 12, 2024, compared to the same time in 2023.

The Convention Center Area Command saw the biggest drop in car thefts, down around 54 percent year-to-date over last year. Auto thefts are down in the Southeast Area Command by about 37 percent.

The Bolden Area Command is down around 28 percent. The Downtown Area Command is down 27 percent. The South Central Area Command is down 22 percent, and the Spring Valley Area Command is down about eight percent.

Three area commands saw a rise in auto thefts year-to-date. Thefts rose in the Northwest Area Command by nearly 20 percent. The Enterprise Area Command is up about 15 percent. Auto thefts in the Summerlin Area Command are up about 6 percent, according to LVMPD figures.
