LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Witnesses of a Wednesday night bus stop crash that left two dead and three injured describe a gruesome scene.
The woman accused of crashing into that bus stop, killing a man and teen, appeared in a Clark County courtroom Thursday afternoon.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, 64-year-old Cynthia Phelps was speeding and driving the wrong way on Boulder Highway when she slammed into that bus stop near Sahara.
Officers say Phelps displayed signs of impairment following the crash and was taken into custody Wednesday night. During her initial court appearance Thursday, her bail was set at $500,000.
“It was just really sad, I don’t know, I never want to experience that again, it was hard to see 100 percent” a witness of the crash said.
That witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he saw the scene from start to finish. He used to use the bus stop nearly every day, but says he won’t use it again.
“This bus stop is the main bus stop that everybody takes. So to see people just casually waiting there to get on the bus and then boom. It’s crazy how short life is,” he said.
The bus stop sits directly across from two businesses, including Four Mile Bar. Pam Corsinelli, who has worked at the bar for over 20 years, says she’s seen several bus stop crashes during her time working on Boulder Highway.
“Bus stops around here, in this town, are dangerous I think. I’ve been here since 1963, and I’ve seen in the past 15 years at least seven different incidents with vehicles running into bus stops,” she says.
In 2019, RTC worked to make bus stops safer by pushing 1,100 of their bus shelters five feet away from the curb. They also pilot tested bollards at 20 different bus stops across the valley.
Bollards were present at the stop involved in last night’s crash, but they appeared to be bent back from the impact of the car.
“What can you say to somebody that’s just lost half of their family. There’s nothing you can say,” Corsinelli says. “It’s tragic.”
