HENDERSON, Nev. (FOX5) – Everyone in the Las Vegas Valley was caught by surprise when we reached 120 degrees this past weekend.

However, some residents woke up to a new surprise as they found out mother nature caused damage to their home.

Camila Lincowski’s Henderson home is less than a decade old and nowhere near needing any major repairs. Little did she know, the heat was slowly shaking things up.

“The window was just sizzling from the heat,” Lincowski said.

Lincowski was caught off guard as she originally thought the noise was a snake hissing.

“I couldn’t believe this was actual glass breaking. It was just so hot,” Lincowski said.

For this particular door at Lincowski’s house, the sun shines directly on it.

On Sunday it was 120 degrees, then on Monday the heat continued and that is when she noticed the damage start.

“It’s the heat it just beats it,” said Nicole Mann, the owner of Glass Vegas.

Mann was at Lincowski’s home with her team assessing the damage and said her company has gotten up to 5 calls just in the last few days from customers dealing with similar issues.

Over at Universal Window, they explained FOX5 just how bad it could get.

“When it is 120 degrees outside and the sun is directly on the glass pane, that pane is facing the sun and can get up to 300 degrees,” Tom Demore the owner said. “When the glass starts to expand it has no where to go because the perimeter is tight against it.”

For Lincowski, the type of glass she had is tempered.

“Once you temper the glass, the molecules start running around and it is unpredictable at that point, ” Mann said.

When it comes to preventing this from happening, there is not much you can do. However, if you are building a new home or replacing your windows, that is when you want to use the most modern material that can handle the high UV rays.
