LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – There were over 200 entries in this year’s MLK Day Parade in downtown Las Vegas.

Nonprofits, corporate sponsors, and hundreds of local students all participated.

“This is fulfilling one of the dreams I’ve always had,” said Shyla Calloway, president of the Black Student Union at Coronado High School. “Just to be a part of something to show that even though we have these types of parades, these issues are still really relevant in our community.”

There are black student unions in 43 Clark County schools. Yvette William’s, director of the black student union network said the groups welcome students of all races, which is right in line with what Dr. King fought for.

“He always had a dream to one day be able to walk in this world without racial division,” Williams said.

Calloway said during her time as president, she hopes to continue the dream and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.

“This parade shows the first part of the struggle kind of got out of the way, but we still have a lot of more steps we need to take in this country in order for his dream to really come true,” Calloway said.
