LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Southern Nevada water officials are reminding residents and businesses that mandatory fall watering restrictions are now in effect across the region.
The seasonal schedule, which began September 1 and runs through October 31, limits outdoor landscape irrigation to three assigned days per week. Under mandatory restrictions, watering remains prohibited on Sundays.
As temperatures begin to cool, officials with the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) emphasize that plants and grass require significantly less water.
SNWA warns that watering outside of assigned days, or allowing sprinklers to spray onto sidewalks and streets, can result in costly water-waste fees.
Mandatory Fall Watering Rules & Tips:
- Check Your Schedule: Landscaping may only be watered on your three designated days. Find your assigned watering days online.
- Grass vs. Plants: Grass should only be watered on your three assigned days. Drip-irrigated trees and plants need even less and should be kept on a two-day-a-week schedule.
- Sprinkler Timing: Run sprinklers in the early morning to minimize water loss from evaporation. Do not water on windy or rainy days.
- Inspect for Leaks: Regularly test your irrigation system to prevent overspray and repair broken lines immediately.
Officials say that unlike indoor water, which is recycled back to Lake Mead, water used outdoors is only used once, making landscape conservation critical to the community’s supply.
