LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —A crossing guard positioned himself in front of a speeding car that approached a crosswalk outside Pinecrest Academy St. Rose Wednesday morning.
“I had no time for thought. All I saw was what was about to happen, and I reacted without thinking about it. If you think about it, it’s going to be too late to do anything about it,” said crossing guard Richard Jones.
The incident happened near East Cactus and Maryland Parkway.
Parent describes close call
A woman, the mother of a kindergarten student, says she and her husband were walking their daughter up to the crosswalk. She says out of nowhere a car came racing up and was not stopping. She says a group of kids started walking when crossing guard Richard Jones, with All City Management Services, jumped in front of a group of kids and started waving his stop sign and yelling at the car to stop. She says it did stop, with only five feet to spare.
“I put out my sign and was waving it in front of him, going, whoa, whoa! To make him stop,” said Jones.
Jones added, “Once he was stopped, he finally backed up about three, four feet. And then that’s where he sat. Blocking traffic.”
“When I saw it, I moved to my left to put myself in front of him, of the car, that is, and stop the foot traffic. So that the car at least had a choice while they were going to see somebody and try and get out of the way. Fortunately, he was able to stop. Couldn’t tell what he was doing,” Jones said.
Other crossing guards report similar incidents
Similar incidents have been reported with other crossing guards with All City Management Services. Jones says things like this happen all the time in the school zone.
“When you enter a school zone, please, slow down, look around. We’re here to help the students cross and their parents. That would be the most important thing,” said Jones.
The parent of the girl in kindergarten wrote in an anonymous email that it was scary but also rewarding to witness what Jones did. She wanted to make sure he was recognized for his safety and awareness.
Jones says this is his fourth year as a crossing guard. He says he signed up for something to do and to help.
