LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Cybercriminal are looking to give students and teachers a master class in identity theft.
It starts with an email claiming to be from the victim’s school, college or university. It says to scan a QR code to update contact information, check benefits or apply for an opportunity.
When the code is scanned, it goes to a Google form which the victim is asked to fill out.
Victims may not notice an issue because Google Forms are common in educational settings – but it’s fake.
Filling it out means handing over sensitive data in one convenient package.
To avoid this type of phishing scam, always be suspicious of QR codes in attachments. Never open unexpected attachments or those from unfamiliar sources.
While this scam targets students and teachers, remember phishing could take aim at anyone.
