LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Desert Pines Golf Club is closing on July 12 and will be redeveloped into affordable housing.
The city says making room for more residential areas will help to mitigate the housing shortage here in Las Vegas. And still, golfers are disappointed that their favorite course is closing its doors.
Known for its deceiving fairways, railroad bunkers, and undulating greens, the Desert Pines Golf Club will undergo a major transformation. As part of the Our Future East Las Vegas plan, the city hopes to build over 1,000 housing units along with offering educational services.
Golfers are discouraged, with one saying, “It’s owned by the city. You know, whatever they do, we just got to go with it. But I’m very disappointed because I’m just getting into golf.”
“It’s so sad to see some of these historic golf courses just disappear.”

Desert Pines is not just a local favorite; it’s a Dye-Designed course, designed by the family of Pete Dye, diabolical genius behind TPC Sawgrass and the Wolf Course at Las Vegas’ own Paiute Golf Resort.
After their round, a local golfer reminisced about the property from decades before.
“So there was a creek called Crawdad Creek, and it came through six and seven in the back corner over here. So as kids, we crawled underneath and we’d play in the sand, we’d play in the dirt. Now I’m an adult. I’m playing in the sand and dirt again. I really enjoyed this track. It’s sad that they’re closing it.”
The City of Las Vegas said there’s no start date yet on the construction of this redevelopment project. Desert Pines Golf Club is scheduled to close on July 12.
