LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A first-of-its-kind polymer center is projected to process 100 million pounds of plastic this year.
The plant opened in December and has been processing plastic bottles and jugs since then.
“The plastic water bottles are ground cleaned and then bagged to use as plastic bottles once again,” said Jeremy Walters with Republic Services.
“Jugs used for milk and laundry detergents go through a similar process and are then bagged and like colors,” added Walters.
Even the bottle caps and rings are collected, cleaned and sold separately. The plant aims to have that plastic turned into water bottles.
The plant processes plastics from across the western U.S. and is the first of its kind in North America.
Republic will open another Polymer plant in the eastern U.S. in the not-too-distant future.
