LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The City of Henderson said sections of the River Mountains Loop bike trail damaged by stormwater Friday are temporarily closed and that it will develop a plan to repair them.

In a statement, the city said it will restore the trail sections as quickly as possible. But other parts of the trail remain open.

There are only a few trouble spots, two washed-out or rock-covered areas just east of Lake Las Vegas. And then one spot near Mountain Lake Park west of Lake Las Vegas, according to some Henderson city employees on scene Monday.

What happened Friday

Stormwater covered a couple of different spots of Lake Mead Parkway around Lake Las Vegas on Friday, which happens in the area during heavy rain.

Two bikers from Canada had to detour around the damaged bike trail and ride on the road for a short distance.

City response

Two City of Henderson employees checked the damaged section of trail. The city has cleaned up the trail before, but the damage this time is worse, according to the employees.

They said the trail carries water toward Lake Mead, and they expect water to come down the trail from time to time. When that happens, the trail usually has a little sand and small rocks, which crews clear away.

It is not known when the damaged bike sections will be repaired.

FOX5 also reached out to the Regional Flood Control District about all the water that caused damage Friday and previously in the area. Officials told FOX5 that flood infrastructure is part of its long-term planning for the impacted areas, which includes channels and detention basins to control water after it hits the ground.
