LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas panaderia is preparing for more customers ahead of the Día de los Muertos holiday, a busy time of year the owner said she takes pride in.

The ovens at La Asuncion Panaderia do not stop running this time of year. Owner Marta Vazquez Aguilar is preparing for one of the busiest times of the year.

“Thank God we’ve had a lot of sales of pan de muerto right now,” Vazquez Aguilar said.

Tradition from Mexico

Vazquez Aguilar grew up with the pan de muerto she is making, more than a thousand miles away in Mexico.

“We honor the dead — we set up a large altar for each of them — and there are many traditions and celebrations in Oaxaca,” she said.

Customers buy bread for altars

As Día de los Muertos approaches, customers continue to come in for the bread to place on altars to honor loved ones who have died.

“Every year, my grandmother, my mother, and my uncles and aunts make their offering,” customer Roberta Ramos said. “It’s a very beautiful tradition involving pan de muerto, and it’s a tradition for the ofrendas.”

Dough use and meaning

Vazquez Aguilar said the bread is a symbol of remembrance and a tradition passed down through generations. So far, the bakery has used as much as 150 pounds of dough in a couple of days.

“It’s very important so that our culture isn’t lost, because our culture is beautiful,” she said.

Vazquez Aguilar said that as more people discover pan de muerto, she hopes they will discover the meaning behind it as well.
