LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas man faces five years in prison after law enforcement officials said he cost the U.S. millions in tax loss.
Department of Justice officials said Michael J. Moore, of Las Vegas, pleaded guilty Friday to charges related to advising clients to commit tax evasion.
According to the DOJ, for approximately a decade, Moore promoted a scheme called the Special Tax Shelter Strategy through his tax and accounting business, X Tax Pros. Officials said he prepared tax returns that eliminated taxes owed to the IRS, creating, in most cases, a large tax refund.
“Moore charged the clients tens of thousands of dollars in fees, which the clients paid from the refunds they received from the IRS,” a DOJ news release said.
The resulting tax returns were falsified, DOJ officials said, in many cases reporting a large loss from a business Moore controlled. Other clients received falsified entries relating to the cost of goods sold and royalty expenses.
Federal officials said Moore caused a total tax loss of $3.5 million to the United States.
Moore is set to be sentenced Dec. 8 and could face up to five years in prison, as well as a period of supervised release, restitution and monetary penalties.
