LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — FOX5 has learned that a short-term rental had no license and code enforcement investigated two complaints before a party turned deadly over the weekend.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, around 2 a.m. Sunday, dispatchers received a 911 call reporting gunfire in the 7200 block of Atascadero Creek Court, near Warm Springs Road and Jones Boulevard.
Officers from Spring Valley Area Command responded to the area and found a male in the driveway of the home suffering from gunshot wound. The male has been identified as Dzale Murrel, 18, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
Officers said the shooting happened at an Airbnb party.
Airbnb sent FOX5 the following statement:
“Airbnb has a strict ban on disruptive parties. We’ve suspended the listing, as well as the booking guest’s account, and stand ready to support the Las Vegas Metro Police Department in their investigation.”
History of Complaints and Legal Hurdles
FOX5 learned the history behind two complaints against the property: the first complaint occurred in May 2025, and Code Enforcement ordered the owner to cease operating as an unlicensed STR, according to county officials.
The owner complied and allowed Airbnb bookings through month-to-month rent, county officials said.
The second complaint came June 28; officials said the County was unable to issue fines, citations or place a lien on the property for illegal STR operations because of an ongoing federal injunction, officials said.
FOX5 reached out to the homeowner listed on County property records; a man on the phone denied he owned the property and disconnected the call twice.
County officials can still enforce quality of life issues surrounding noise and trash amid the injunction.
Ordinance Exemptions and Verification Concerns
County commissioners recently passed an ordinance that curbs websites from completing bookings from illegal listings. Airbnb remains exempt from the new ordinance amid the injunction, officials said:
“Clark County Business License will be working with each listing platform to create a verification process. Once these verification processes are in place, the ordinance will be enforceable. It’s important to note that Airbnb will not be encumbered by these new rules as the injunction is in place. The County anticipates this will have an impact on issues such as these because an unlicensed STR will not be able to be booked on listing platforms, again, with the exception being Airbnb.”
Neighbors Raise Alarm Over ‘Party Houses’
Monday, neighbors told FOX5 that short-term rentals and party houses were a growing problem on their street; FOX5 found three short-term rental listings online, all on the same street and right next door to one another on Atascadero Creek Court. County code mandates that licensed listings maintain a certain distance between one another; properties that are too close to a previously-approved licensee would not be eligible for a STR license.
“These kids get together and rent out these houses, they charge a fee, and then they send a massive text message to all the kids around to come and do these parties,” neighbor Cici said, concerned about the rowdy crowds and visitors coming to the neighborhood.
“Our neighborhood should not have been impacted… now our children, our neighbors, we all have to live with this after effect,” she said.
