LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Over a hundred women gathered at the BLVD rooftop Wednesday evening to scream in solidarity with the alleged Cornell 7 victim, disguised as Jane Doe.
Organizer Vegas Girl Events set up the “scream” as a safe space for women to let out their frustrations over the case and their own experiences with abuse.
Alexis Cardiel says that, as a victim herself, she felt the Cornell 7 case impact her emotionally.
“I feel like a lot of women just live with like a weird anger rage that we couldn’t stand up for ourselves. I just wanted to provide a safe space for women to just feel safe and just let it out for a second,” Cardiel said.
Participants were guided through the scream by a mentor who helped warm them up with physical and vocal exercises, before letting out nearly a minute of screams.
Behind every scream, there’s a story.
Shay, a Las Vegas local, says she felt called to the event because of her own experience with assault.
“I personally have been a victim of an assault several times from childhood through adulthood. So, it’s something that’s personal to me,” she said.
Some at the event say Jane Doe’s story is all too common.
“This happens to so many women on a daily basis, unfortunately, and no one is taking it serious. No one’s batting an eye at it,” Sidney Stanton said.
The Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence said that while progress has been made, there’s still a lot of work needed to make victims feel safe.
“Now that we have this Cornell situation going on, we need to have resources readily available,” Saran Almond said.
