LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas man has made it his mission to advocate for the skateboarding community, especially those with disabilities.
Edward Jeffries started Kickpush, an organization dedicated to helping skaters get opportunities to show their skills, particularly adaptive skaters who are riding with disabilities.
“I became disabled at 23,” Jeffries said. But he says he did not let his disability stop him from skating. “The doctors told me I’ll be stuck in the braces for life. I just continued to keep skating. I became the Las Vegas sports social champion. I became the WCMX world champion.”
Jeffries’ path led him to the 2024 Paralympics. He is now trying to raise money to help other adaptive skaters achieve that goal.
“It brings me joy. I love doing it. I love working for free for the community,” Jeffries said.
The skating community is a tight-knit one in Las Vegas. Adrian McCoy has been skating for almost 29 years. “It’s therapeutic at this point in my life. So it keeps the distractions away, keeps me youthful.”
McCoy said Jeffries’ work is inspiring. “It’s amazing, man, because you know he never gave up and to see him still pushing forward. It’s an amazing thing to see,” he said.
Jasmin Jeffries said the community appreciates the effort.
“To have a heart, to want to give back to the community and see other skaters succeed, you know, it warms our heart, it warms the community’s heart,” Jasmin Jeffries said.
Edward Jeffries said adaptive skaters are often overlooked.
“We are like the underdogs, you know, but the underdogs always make it to the top,” Jeffries said.
Jeffries is raising money to get six to 12 adaptive skaters from all over the country to the Jackalope Festival in Virginia Beach. His hope is getting them on that showcase could help get them to the Paralympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
He is asking for community support to help these skaters get the same opportunity he had to show what they are capable of.
The Jackalope Festival in Virginia Beach is happening at the end of the month.
