LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Mothers experiencing housing instability are getting a unique opportunity through a local nonprofit.

Notes with a Purpose has launched the Lullaby Project, which pairs mothers with professional teaching artists to create original songs for their children. The songs are professionally recorded with support from UNLV, creating a lasting keepsake for both mother and child.

Kaina Thomas is staying at Living Grace Homes, a transitional housing shelter in Henderson, with her sons Xaiver and Ezekiel.

“When you don’t have anything, this is honestly the best place to be,” Thomas said.

Thomas initially did not want to participate in the Lullaby Project offered to mothers and expectant mothers at the shelter. She changed her mind when she realized the songs created for her sons would be a gift that would last a lifetime.

“I’m not going to be here forever. And I don’t want them to just have my materialistic things. I want them to take like a piece of me with them when I do go,” Thomas said. “As somebody who doesn’t have her mom, and I wish I did I know how it feels to not be liked or wanted by your mom, and I would never want my kids to feel that way ever.”

“To be a writer and make her vision come to life is just like the cherry on top. It’s a wonderful experience,” shared Gary Fowler, a professional musician, who helped Thomas create the music.

“I was fully expecting to make like a soft lullaby. She told me she likes like Rock-a-bye Baby and I was like, okay, we got it. So rave music it is,” Fowler said.

Alexandria Le, president and artistic director of Notes with a Purpose, brought the program to Southern Nevada. Le is a classical concert pianist and former Carnegie Hall fellow from Las Vegas.

“I just fell in love with the program and I wanted to bring this to Southern Nevada because I am from Las Vegas,” Le said. “This is so beneficial for the mothers because they get to process their feelings. They also get to find their voice, their own creativity. And for the babies themselves, hearing their mother’s voice is going to be priceless.”

This is the first time the Lullaby Project has come to Southern Nevada. You can learn more about the project and how to support it by visiting https://www.noteswithapurpose.org/
