LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Neighbors near East Bonanza Road say a crosswalk signal does not always stop traffic, raising concerns after a 15-year-old girl was critically injured trying to cross the road last week.

Las Vegas police said the teen was hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross East Bonanza Road. Police said she was walking outside of the crosswalk.

The crosswalk is located near Sandhill Road within a marked school zone. The crosswalk lights are designed to slow drivers as pedestrians cross.

Residents report ongoing issues

Rick Voskuhl, a nearby resident, said the crosswalk signal button does not always work.

“There have been numerous times when I push the crosswalk signal button that is on this side of the road, it doesn’t work,” Voskuhl said.

He was hit near the crosswalk last year, and said he is still traumatized.

“Somebody came shooting through in an SUV and hit me at about 40 miles an hour. The first five days they weren’t sure I was going to make it,” he said.

He said he calls the area “Bonanza Speedway” or “Bonanza Raceway.”

“Because even the traffic signals, people do not respect or respond to them at all,” he said.

City responds to questions

FOX5 asked the City of Las Vegas, which manages the crosswalk, whether the school-zone flashers and crosswalk beacons were working and whether the location has enough protection for children and seniors.

The city said the area is an active 15-mile-an-hour school zone and that the flashers and pedestrian beacons are operational. The city said the flashers run on a timer, from 7:20 to 8:15 a.m. and for about an hour around dismissal.

FOX5 also asked whether the latest crash would trigger any immediate changes to the crossing or that stretch of Bonanza Road.

The city said it is reviewing the entire Bonanza corridor between Las Vegas Boulevard and Lamb Boulevard for possible safety upgrades, including this crossing. The city said the study is in its early stages, and it does not expect a full list of recommended changes until next year.

“Pedestrians are very secondary, even though we have a school zone and everything,” Voskuhl said.

Investigation continues

FOX5 reached out to Las Vegas police for an update on the driver and whether charges would be filed. Police did not respond. The driver stayed at the scene, and police do not believe impairment was involved.
