LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Nevada Department of Education held a board meeting Wednesday where they addressed the federal layoffs.
“I also want to publicly thank those who have worked so very hard at the US Department of Education in many aspects of work, whether it’s literacy, whether its mathematics, making sure that we have the funding that we’re entitled to as a state,” Superintendent of Instruction Jhone Ebert said. “They work very hard each and every day and I can only imagine what they are going through as this shift happens.”
The United States Department of Education said on Tuesday it would be laying off nearly half of its employees. However, Ebert noted there were no changes to Nevada Department of Education right now The Board will continue monitoring the layoffs and if those changes will have an impact on the Silver State.
“The law has not changed at this moment in time,” Ebert added. “There is a lot of conversation that we all need to be aware of and involved in but there has not been any specific changes that are affecting the state of Nevada in this moment in time.”
Ebert pointed out about 75% of the state’s Department of Education staff was federally funded.
“But I continue to remain connected to those who are continuing on with the work and staying informed and also providing what Nevadans would like to see as we move forward so that our voice is heard at the national level.” she added.
