LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Attorney General Aaron Ford says Nevada is leading the nation in the fight against Medicaid fraud.
Ford says the federal Office of Inspector General has recertified Nevada’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, saying it has a strong commitment to its mission and a solid record of effectiveness.
What the unit investigates
The unit investigates doctors, clinics and other providers who try to defraud Nevada Medicaid. It also handles cases of elder abuse and neglect.
Conviction numbers
Over the last three fiscal years, Nevada reported 75 Medicaid fraud convictions, ranking first out of 11 similarly sized units across the country.
In fiscal year 2025 alone, the unit reported more than 300 investigations, 35 fraud convictions, 25 indictments, 13 civil settlements and judgments, and $18.5 million in recovered money.
Proposed legislation
Ford says his office is pushing new legislation for the 2027 session to strengthen and expand the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit to better protect taxpayers and patients.
Funding and penalties
The unit is funded mostly by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, with the remainder coming from the state. Anyone convicted of Medicaid fraud can be barred from participating in Medicaid or Medicare in the future.
How to report fraud
Anyone who suspects Medicaid fraud, elder abuse or neglect is asked to call the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit at 702-486-3420 or 775-684-1100.
