LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Families with children in youth sports are feeling the effects of a closure at Nevada Youth Sports Complex, which officials believe was sparked by Fourth of July fireworks.
The complex, which opened one year ago, remains closed and without power as investigators work to determine exactly what happened. The facility hosts volleyball, pickleball, basketball, flag football, and other sports.
Damage and displacement
Staff said the custom flooring alone carries a price tag of approximately $350,000. The closure is affecting thousands of families — including those who did not use the facility — as games and practices are being moved to other locations, packing more youth athletes into less space.

Families respond
Edwin Balaoro, whose daughter plays volleyball at Nevada Youth Sports, said the closure has created uncertainty for young athletes.
“It kind of sucks having this gym down because there’s not a whole lot of places to play indoor volleyball,” Balaoro said. “Obviously, familiar courts are always better. You know, she likes playing where she knows.”
He said his daughter was troubled by the news. “She was very concerned because she loves playing volleyball. She loves the sport. She loves being active. She’s like, where are we going to play now?”
Balaoro said some of his daughter’s games will temporarily move to the YMCA on Durango, but he said he does not know where the team will go long term.
