LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas police officer and the suspect in a police shooting are dead Tuesday afternoon.

Officials with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said dispatch received a call just before 4 p.m. about a person with a firearm at a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue.

Police officers and drones were dispatched to the area. The caller told police the person was waving the firearm and “appeared to be intoxicated.”

Police said officers made contact with the suspect, and a gun battle started. FOX5 saw police investigating the shooting near Hacienda and Mountain Vista streets.

“A 30-year-old Las Vegas police officer was then worked on heroically by the Clark County Fire Department, other officers and EMS,” LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill said. “He was transported to UMC where nurses worked to save his life.”

“Unfortunately, our officer has passed,” he said.

McMahill said the late officer was also a Marine veteran. He has been with Metro since November 2023.

The public is advised to avoid the area due to a large police presence.

No immediate information was available on the shooting.

“As you can imagine, I have lots of grieving police officers, a grieving community. I haven’t gotten to the scene yet; I came straight here. I came to see the officer and his family,” McMahill said.

The sheriff thanked the men and women of EMS, Clark County Fire, and nurses and doctors who tried to save his life.
